If there is one thing that we need to cover before anything else that would be SAFETY. It is important to practice the best safety when working on your car.

  • Do not do vehicle maintenance when your car is only supported by a jack. Use jack stands or car ramps to secure the vehicle in the air.
  • Do not attempt to complete an oil change when the engine is hot. Make sure it is cold before you start.
  • Never perform vehicle maintenance on unlevel or soft ground. To ensure safety for your vehicle on jack stands or ramps you need to be on level, firm ground for support.
  • Wear protective gear like gloves, eye goggle, and long clothes that cover your skin. Used oil is toxic and carcinogenic, so you don't want it to touch your skin.

Now that we have gone over safety it is time to go over TOOLS that you will be using during your do-it-yourself oil change.

  • Jack and jack stands or vehicle ramps
  • Box end or socket wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Oil filter wrench
  • New oil filter
  • New oil
  • Funnel

There you have what you will need for your oil change. You may also want rags to wipe off areas with too much oil or cleaning off parts. Next, let's get done to the STEPS for your DIY oil change.

  • Open the hood of your car.
  • If using vehicle ramps, drive your car onto your ramps until you reach the top. Engage the emergency brake and make sure the car is in park. If using jack stands, jack your car up, place the jack stands in the proper location (see owner's manual), and raise the car jacks to where they are touching the car and supporting it.
  • Remove oil cap on engine to prevent a vacuum effect during drainage.
  • Place oil drain pan underneath of the oil drain plug on the oil pan on your engine.
  • Unscrew the drain plug using your box end or socket wrench, and allow the oil to drain into your drain pan completely.
  • Once the oil is completely drained, screw the drain plug back in.
  • Place your drain pan underneath the old oil filter as you remove it using your oil filter wrench. It is likely that oil will flow out of it upon removal.
  • Now that the oil filter is removed, you want to replace it with the new oil filter. Rub a little bit of new oil around the rubber gasket of the new filter.  Then, screw the new oil filter on using your hand. Once it is tight, give it another quarter turn, but not too far. Damages can happen if the oil filter is screwed on too tight.
  • Place your funnel into the opening where the oil cap was.
  • Fill your engine with the recommended new oil and recommended amount (both can be found in your owner's manual).
  • Once you have refilled your engine with oil, place the oil cap back on.
  • Raise your car off of the jack stands using your jack, and then lower to the ground. Or reverse your car off of your vehicle ramps.
  • Turn your engine on and let run for a few minutes then turn the car off and let cool.
  • Check your oil level using the dipstick in your engine. If it is at the right amount, then you are all finished, but if more oil is needed, add accordingly.
  • Close the hood of your car.

Hopefully these steps, tools, and safety tips have helped you with completing your own oil changes. If you have any questions or would like your next oil change completed by one of our professionals, give us a call or visit us at Corwin Dodge Ram.
