The RAM 1500 is a powerful, sophisticated option for drivers who are looking for a reliable pickup. It's been around since the 1980s and has been building its solid reputation along the way. Let's take a look at the development of each generation in the history of the RAM 1500.

Before the RAM 1500 pickup truck, there were Dodge trucks. These pickups sported a ram ornament on the hood, a notable decoration that provided the inspiration for the name of the truck line.

First Generation

The RAM name was first used in 1981. These pickups offered the same configurations as the Dodge pickups that preceded them, including standard cab, extended cab, and four-door Crew Cab. It also used the same engines, like the 95-horsepower 3.7-liter and the 170-horsepower 5.9-liter. The 1981 Ram trucks did have some updates as well, like a new sheet metal that helped decrease weight and updated instrument panels.

Second Generation

In 1994, the RAM truck debuted with a full redesign. A rugged styling, an impressive engine lineup, and a comfortable interior made this second generation a new favorite. This year was also the debut of the 1500, 2500, and 3500 designations. New engines like the 220-horsepower 5.2-liter V8 and the 5.9-liter Cummins Turbodiesel with 420 lb-ft of torque brought new levels of capability to the Ram line.

Third Generation

The third generation of the RAM pickup launched in 2002 and managed to update its offerings to exceed driver's expectations while holding onto what drivers loved from the previous generation. For the most part, the styling stayed the same, and while two engines were carried over from the second generation the new model also offered a new 3.7-liter V6 and a 4.7-liter V8 with 215 and 235 horsepower respectively.

Fourth Generation

The current generation of the RAM 1500 debuted in 2009. Today's RAM 1500 offers the comfort, features, and safety you would expect from a sophisticated SUV along with a greater performance than ever before. This generation adds design details like the coil spring rear suspension for a smoother ride, plus more power from the 390-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

Future Generations

We're looking forward to seeing what the future RAM 1500 models bring to the segment as the RAM 1500 continues to grow with the times.
